Two components​

A device's footprint breaks down into two parts:

  • Manufacturing: by far the heaviest part. Producing a computer emits a lot of CO2 (extraction, components, assembly, transport). This footprint is "already paid" once the device is made.
  • Usage: the device's electricity consumption during its use, spread over time.

What you see​

A view of the total fleet footprint and per device, with the manufacturing / usage breakdown. This helps you understand where the impact really is.

Why manufacturing changes everything​

Since manufacturing dominates the footprint, extending a device's lifespan avoids manufacturing a new machine, thus avoids the largest share of CO2. This is the foundation of LongLife's environmental value, detailed in CO2 avoided by extending lifespan.
